My name is Janet Packer and I come from a town close to the Peak District in the United Kingdom. I am currently in the process of setting up an outdoor nursery for children aged 2 to 5 in the Peak District! The idea is to have around 4 acres of space outside where children can learn through playing, grow their own food, learn to cook on a camp fire etc. If this goes well, I would like to grow the business to after school and holiday clubs, family sessions and to also offer training to other early years practitioners. Currently, I am working with potential investors to get my own piece of land.
For a few years now, I have had the idea of setting this up. I pursued a degree in environmental studies and teaching, and for my dissertation, I was given the chance to go to Vancouver. Here, I got inspired to develop a teaching curriculum where children would be outside. I believe that many curricula that only take place in the classroom are too confined, so I started to research other possibilities and alternatives.
In my area, my kindergarten would be the first place where there is a fulltime, outside curriculum! In the long term it would be great if I could develop the business as a franchise, but right now I am just fully focused on getting started.
To all women who want to set up their own business, I would say: Believe in your idea and believe in yourself! You will face obstacles and get knocked down, but if you really have a passion for your idea, you will make it!
