The Icelandic Regional Development Institute is an independent institution owned by the Icelandic state. The supreme authority of the Institute is held by the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture who nominates all seven board members. The Institute has two main sources of income, a regular budget allocation and interest on loans.

With 24 employees and headquarters located in the northern part of Iceland, the Institute supports and strengthens local development by the provision of credit along with monitoring and researching regional development in Iceland.
